Writing Level Test 2, MKI – 231227.02 (Ages 12-15)

This test is tailored for older ESL learners, challenging them with more complex topics and encouraging critical thinking and detailed expression. It assesses their advanced language skills and their ability to articulate thoughts on broader issues. As with the first test, regular review and modification based on student performance and feedback will help maintain its relevance and effectiveness in assessing language proficiency.

ESL Writing Test for Ages 12-15

Instructions for Students:

  • Answer each question to the best of your ability.
  • Write clearly and use complete sentences.
  • You have 60 minutes to complete this test.

Part 1: Short Answer Responses (15 minutes, with about three or four sentences per answer)

  1. Describe your ideal holiday. Where would you go and what would you do?
  2. What are the benefits of learning a foreign language?
  3. Discuss a book or a movie that has had a significant impact on you.
  4. If you could meet any historical figure, or a current influential figure, who would it be and why?
  5. Explain the importance of environmental conservation.

Part 2: Paragraph Writing (20 minutes)

  • Topic: “The Importance of Teamwork.” Write a complete paragraph discussing why teamwork is important. You can use examples from sports, school projects, how you imagine your work future, or any other area of life.

Part 3: Argumentative or Descriptive Essay (20 minutes)

  • Topic Options (Choose one):
    1. Argumentative Essay: “Social media does more harm than good.” Agree or disagree with this statement and provide reasons for your opinion.
    2. Descriptive Essay: Describe a place you have visited that left a lasting impression on you. What did you see, and why was it memorable?

Instructions for Examiners:

  • Use the provided scoring guide to evaluate the students’ responses.
  • Assess grammar, vocabulary, and coherence in Part 1 and Part 2.
  • In Part 3, focus on the argumentative skills or descriptive abilities, along with content, creativity, and organization.
  • Offer feedback to guide students in their language learning journey.
